El Lissitzky (1890-1941) was a Russian artist, designer, photographer, typographer and architect who is best known for his contributions to the Russian avant-garde, and the co-development of "Suprematism”.  "Suprematism" can best be described as art focusing on geometric forms with a limited color palette. As a designer, Lissitzky thrived on the concept of the artist as an agent for change.

This book, which focuses on El Lissitzky and his design work, utilizes his idea of “das zielbewußte Schaffen” or “goal-oriented creation”, while the formatting was inspired by his modular art gallery, “Kabinett der Abstrakten” (1927-1928). At the invitation of Alexander Dorner, Lissitzky created this changeable gallery, with the idea of creating an environment where the art could be moved and rearranged, allowing the viewer to participate and become the “agent of change”.

Likewise, this book was designed to allow the viewers to curate their own experience. The reader is able to pair the top and bottom pages in any order creating a unique and interactive introduction to the work of Lissitzky.  Three removable cards are included in the back pocket of the cover, describing additional Lissitzky works in greater depth.
