The Portfolio Throwdown is an annual portfolio review hosted by the Light Factory, which offers participants the opportunity to present their work to seasoned professionals for critique. Located in the historical Plaza Midwood, on the outskirts of Uptown Charlotte, the Light Factory is a well known and acclaimed environment for Photographers and Filmmakers. The subject matter reflects the location by providing the history of the camera and displays some of the more unique and obscure camera designs from history.
The promotional piece is unbound to reference the loose pieces of a photography portfolio and engages the reader through the physical qualities of the piece like the tooth of the paper, and the smell of the ink. These qualities harken back to a more traditional and historical approach to advertising. A pinhole camera, created entirely out of paper, was also designed to persuade the user to try a unique and historical technique that they may have never had the opportunity to explore. The illustrations feature “larger-than-life” depictions of cameras to encompass the excitement and magnitude of the opportunity that awaits the review participants.
As a group project, my focus was creating the visual aesthetic, including all illustrations and visual graphics, as well as layout and text formatting. Event content, pinhole mechanics, and camera tests were created and handled by Associate Professor Dave Brodeur, Associate Professor Aspen Hocchalter, Amelia Howden, Pankita Patel, Sara Sodano and Carlos Vargas.
